    In the white house, crawling on the bathroom rug... hiding inside the ship made of doors out back... playing in the old car at the nursery school across the street... handing my Dad tools for $1 per day... running over the sand dunes on Cape Cod... eating dinner at Grandma's... yelling Superman! as I dove through the back door window, much to my mother's surprise... throwing a shoe at Mrs. Kelly, my first grade teacher, who called my Halloween costume "cute."

    Building the brown house in the woods... ice-skating on Teatown lake... catching frogs in the pond with the Fresh Air kids... getting bitten by the squirrel... watching the goat climb onto visitors' cars... trying to keep the rooster from waking the neighbors... helping the firemen put out the forest fire... learning to ride horses... sleeping with Mischief, our raccoon... playing kickball for two years in a failed open classroom experiment.

    Starting at Hackley as the new sixth-grader... commuting to school by train with the grownups... sensing the beauty of math with Mr. Hubbard... building my eighth grade science project... working hard to pay for half of school... audio-taping every Star Trek episode... learning chess from my Dad... taking special math and physics classes with Mr. Litvinov... biking to and from school each day... going to state finals with the math team... playing Dungeons and Dragons all night... learning how to program on IBM 5150s in APL... breaking the file encryption...trying to optimize my high school's scheduling algorithm (long before learning it was an NP-complete problem)...feeding punch cards into Technicon's IBM 360...programming a console game to keep the night shift computer operators out of the way...running up a $300,000 computer time bill for my high school (50 times that of the previous year).

    Falling in love with the Princeton campus...meeting fellow freshmen in Outward Bound week...working at the computer center...playing Ultimate Frisbee with the gang...exploring Adventure all night...riding a greyhound pass all around America...being put on 2-year probation for hacking passwords...playing Defender all night...programming the Sinclair...mail-merging for a foreign summer job Junior year...absorbing Japanese culture in Tokyo...sharing the 4.5 tatami (9' x9') apartment with my roommate...learning Japanese...meeting new friends...frequenting the discos in Roppongi...dressing up for job interviews...being very impressed with the Microsoft recruiter, Steve Ballmer.

    Joining the 225-person Microsoft...learning 8086 assembler and c...working on the mouse driver...playing with the Star, the Lisa, then the Mac pulling all-nighters helping with Windows 1.0...preparing for product reviews with Bill...developing Herbert and Rocks...being part of the CD-ROM group...jointly developing OS/2 Presentation Manager with IBM.

    Starting hDC...consulting with Matsushita...hiring employees...shipping EGA-16 and ClickStart...growing into new space...enhancing the Windows user interface...building a family of MicroApps...river-rafting with the hDC team...developing Power Launcher...surviving the utility shakeout...innovating with Application Librarian (later Express Meter)...redirecting and rebuilding the company...assembling the Express Systems team...merging with WRQ.
